The reason why Denso chose MIPS core for next gen automotive SoC

Denso, Toyota’s biggest supplier, announced that they will collaborate with Imagination Technologies to do research on CPU cores at the era of autonomous vehicles. The main stream of automotive SoC architectures is ARM acquired by Softbank. Nonetheless, the reason for choosing a minor Imagination Technologies is that low-cost parallel processing is possible, Denso said in the interview.

Low-cost parallel processing is required for autonomous vehicles

Ultra high-performance CPU is tend to be catched attention, indeed, CPU of ECU that individually controls the brake and the power train must also change significantly.

If the driver changes from a human to a machine, the ECU is also required to respond in units of sub-second to micro-second. For that purpose, the CPU of the ECU can not make it in time without parallel processing.

MIPS core is hardware multi-threaded processing
